The Bresser LCD microscope has a 3.5-inch screen where the eyepiece would be, so you watch the slide on the screen rather than through a lens. That suits children, people who wear glasses and anyone sharing the view. Behind the screen is a 5 MP camera that takes photos and video, and the microscope connects to a Windows computer by USB.

Three objectives, 4x, 10x and 40x, give 50x to 500x of real magnification, and the camera's digital zoom takes the picture up to 2000x, though the digital part enlarges the picture rather than adding detail. There's LED light from below for slides and from above for solid objects, a colour filter disc, and a stage with knobs that move the slide forwards, back and from side to side.

It runs from a mains adapter. In the box are an experiment kit with blank slides and cover slips, yeast, sea salt, brine shrimp eggs and a hatchery, a USB cable and a nylon pouch. The Rainbow DM500 has a bigger tilting screen and a battery but much less magnification for slides.
