Magnification

An auxiliary lens that fits under the zoom head of the Science ETD-201 and shifts its whole range. The 0.7x takes the microscope down to 5.6x to 35x, and the 2x takes it up to 16x to 100x. Bresser lists both for the ETD-201 only.

The 0.7x is the one for working under the microscope with tools, because it raises the working distance, the gap between the lens and the object in focus, to 137 mm, and it gives a larger, brighter field that also suits a camera on the third tube. The 2x goes the other way and brings the lens a little closer, but Bresser points out that the depth of field at the resulting power is greater than you'd get by reaching the same figure with stronger eyepieces, so a conversion lens like this is its preferred route past 50x.

Each lens comes on its own. The 2x is aluminium. Our guide to magnification explains why depth of field shrinks as power rises, and the other stereo parts are in microscope accessories.

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Soldering, dissection or repair under the ETD-201, with the 0.7x
  • A wider, brighter view for a camera on the trinocular port
  • Fine detail past 50x with the 2x, keeping more depth of field than stronger eyepieces

Not for

  • Other Bresser stereo microscopes; the ETD-201 is the only model listed
  • Compound microscopes with a turret of DIN objectives
  • Using both lenses at once; they fit one at a time
