The Junior CM-04 is a compound microscope for children from age 6, Bresser's figure. It's lit from beneath the stage, so it's for thin samples such as the three prepared slides in the box, a layer of onion skin, a pulled hair or a drop of pond water, at 100x to 900x. Bresser lists biology as the use and the body is black plastic.

Three objectives, 10x, 20x and 30x, turn on a revolving head, and two eyepieces, a WF10x and a WF30x, swap in the tube to give the settings between 100x and 900x. The 10x eyepiece is the one to start with, since it shows a wider and brighter patch of the slide; the 30x eyepiece reaches the top figure but shows less of the sample at a time. The LED under the stage has a dimmer, and it runs on two AA batteries, which aren't included.

The accessories run to a Microcut for slicing thin sections, a scraper knife and a needle, tweezers, a pipette, a petri dish, sample bottles, a measuring cylinder, blank slides with cover glasses and labels, a magnifying glass, and a brine shrimp hatching kit with eggs and yeast. A smartphone holder clips a phone over the eyepiece for photos. Our guide to microscopes for kids covers what to expect from a microscope at this level and where an adult needs to help.

The Junior 40-640x above it starts at 40x, which makes finding a sample easier, and has a zoom eyepiece; the rest of our microscopes for kids are listed together.

Is it right for you?
