A box of tools for making your own slides, with no microscope in it. It's for a child who has a compound microscope, such as the Bresser Junior Biolux SEL, and has looked at the prepared slides that came with it enough times.

Bresser lists a pipette for picking up a drop of pond water, tweezers, a hand magnifier, blank slides and cover plates to put a sample under, and a brine shrimp kit made up of a magnifier box, shrimp eggs, yeast to feed them and sea salt to hatch them in. Hatch the eggs in salt water, add a pinch of yeast, and the shrimp can be watched in the magnifier box or put on a slide.

The case is white plastic. Bresser's own list ends with "and much more", so expect a few extra bits beyond the ones named here.

Our pond life guide covers what to catch with the pipette and how to get it onto a slide, and our slides and prepared sets page has specimen sets to add once the blanks run out.

Is it right for you?
