The DTX 800 LCD is a bench digital microscope with a 7-inch IPS screen of 1024 by 600 pixels and a 4 MP camera, with 20x to 300x of optical magnification and a digital zoom to 1500x. Nobody looks through an eyepiece, so a whole repair bench or a class can see the same circuit board, solder joint, coin, gemstone or insect at once. Levenhuk lists it for microelectronics, biology, forensics and materials science.

Like the DTX 700 LCD, it has a polarising filter, and turning its ring through 90 degrees cuts the reflections off shiny surfaces such as metal, solder, jewellery and stones. The LEDs have a brightness control, and the spec sheet lists the lighting as dual, above and below the stage. Focus is manual over 5 to 70 mm, the stage is fixed with clips, and the body is plastic.

Photos save at 3 MP or 2 MP, or interpolated up to 16 MP, and video records at 1440p at 30 frames a second, all to a microSD card of up to 128 GB that isn't in the box. A USB-C cable connects it to a computer running PortableCapture Plus, which measures lines, radii, diameters and three-point angles; Levenhuk says to switch the microscope on before launching the software. An HDMI cable feeds a monitor or TV. The built-in 3.7 V 2500 mAh battery charges in 4.5 hours and runs for two, and the charging adapter is included. It won't take an external camera, and the rated operating range is 0 to 40 degrees C.

Along with the adapter and both cables, the box holds a calibration slide for the measuring software, a software CD and the manual. The DTX 700 LCD below it has a 5-inch screen in place of the 7-inch IPS panel; our digital microscope guide compares the two, and the other microscopes for electronics are grouped together.

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Circuit boards and solder joints, with the screen angled for a whole bench
  • Coins, jewellery and gemstones, using the polariser to kill reflections
  • Measured photos through the USB-C link and PortableCapture Plus
  • A classroom monitor or TV over HDMI

Not for

  • Cells and bacteria; 300x optical on a screen is not a compound microscope
  • All-day cordless use; the battery runs about two hours
  • Fitting a different camera; Levenhuk says it takes none
