The Biolux Touch is a compound microscope with a touchscreen in place of the eyepiece, for schools and families who want a whole class or a kitchen table to see the same slide at once. A 5 MP camera behind the screen saves photos as JPG and video as MOV to an SD card of up to 32 GB (not included), and an HDMI socket sends the live picture to a TV, monitor or whiteboard at 30 frames a second.

Objectives of 4x, 10x and 40x sit on the turret, and Bresser gives the range on screen as 30x to 1125x, with a two-finger pinch on the touchscreen taking the picture closer. Bresser says the 40x objective is enough to see small organisms and bacteria in a hay infusion. Focus has coarse and fine controls and the slide moves on a mechanical cross table.

A dimmable LED under the stage lights slides, and a second LED above lights solid samples such as sand, plant matter or a small insect. Bresser suggests the 4x objective with the top light, since nothing needs preparing that way. There's a USB socket, and it runs from the mains adapter in the box. The adapter comes with a European two-pin plug. The body is metal and plastic and stands 29.5 cm tall.

The kit is a full one: a case with five prepared slides, ten blank slides and ten cover slips, preparation needles, a pipette, tweezers and a MikroCut for thin sections, an Artemia set for hatching brine shrimp, an HDMI cable and a dust cover. Our digital microscope guide compares screen models with USB ones. The Bresser LCD 50-2000x below it has a 3.5-inch screen and a 5 MP camera; the Researcher LCD above has a 7-inch screen, a 16 MP sensor and achromatic DIN optics. All our digital microscopes are listed together.

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Showing a slide to a class on a TV or whiteboard over HDMI
  • Children and glasses wearers who find an eyepiece awkward
  • Saving photos and video to an SD card with no computer
  • Sand, leaves and small insects under the top light with the 4x objective

Not for

  • Looking through an eyepiece; there isn't one
  • Use away from a socket; it runs from the mains adapter
  • Oil immersion at 1000x; the top objective is 40x
  • Anyone who needs the SD card in the box; it's sold separately
