Magnification

A 15x or 20x wide field eyepiece in the standard 23.2 mm DIN size, the one most compound microscopes use. Wide field means a larger circle of view than a basic eyepiece of the same power, so more of the slide is in sight at once. Swapping the 10x that came with the microscope for one of these multiplies every objective by 15 or 20 instead of 10.

Bresser lists the WF15x for the Erudit DLX, the Researcher in both bino and trino form, the Bioscience trinocular, the Science TRM-301, ADL 601 P, ADL 601 F, MPO 401 and MTL-201, and the Biolux ICD. The WF20x page names the Erudit DLX, both Researchers and the Biolux ICD. Each sells on its own, so a binocular head needs a pair.

A stronger eyepiece enlarges the picture but can't add detail the objective didn't resolve, so past the 40x objective the gain is comfort rather than information; our guide to magnification sets out where that line falls. More eyepieces and parts are in microscope accessories.

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Raising every setting on an Erudit DLX or Researcher by half or double
  • Replacing a lost 23.2 mm eyepiece
  • A bigger picture for someone who finds 400x small to read

Not for

  • Stereo microscopes with 30 or 30.5 mm tubes
  • Seeing finer detail; resolution comes from the objective
  • The LabZZ M101 and other models with non-standard tubes
