The Researcher Bino is a full-size binocular microscope with a metal body and four objectives, 4x, 10x, 40x and a 100x oil immersion lens, which give 40x to 1000x with the 10x eyepieces. At 1000x, with a drop of the immersion oil from the box, you can see bacteria and the detail inside blood cells, which is where a 400x microscope runs out.

The head is angled at 30 degrees, the eye spacing adjusts from 53 to 75 mm and the eyepieces have ±5 dioptre correction, so it can be set up for each person who uses it. Under the stage is an Abbe condenser with an iris diaphragm, the stage has Vernier scales and holds two slides at once, and focus has coarse and fine controls. The LED is dimmable and runs from the mains adapter in the box; there's no battery option.

Bresser pitches it at biology, medicine and teaching, and it suits an adult hobbyist or a student who wants oil immersion with two eyepieces. It comes with a blue filter, a pouch and a dust cover but no slides, so add a set such as the Bresser 100-slide set. For school-level work at 400x on battery power, the Erudit Basic also has two eyepieces.

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Bacteria, blood cells and stained sections at 1000x with oil
  • Long sessions with both eyes, with adjustable eye spacing and dioptres
  • Careful slide work with the iris diaphragm and Vernier stage
  • Students, adult hobbyists and teaching

Not for

  • Children starting out; a Rainbow or Junior model is simpler
  • Working away from a socket; it runs from the mains only
  • Solid objects such as coins; the light is below the stage only
