The Erudit DLX is a monocular school and hobby microscope that reaches 1000x with a 100x oil immersion objective, so it shows bacteria as well as cells and pond life. The four achromatic DIN objectives are 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x, the 40x and 100x are spring-loaded to protect the slide, and the 10x eyepiece has a pointer for showing someone exactly where to look.

It has a built-in rechargeable battery as well as a mains adapter, so it works on a bench or on a field trip. The LED is dimmable, the Abbe condenser moves up and down and has a diaphragm and a filter holder with a blue filter, and the mechanical stage moves the slide on two axes against a Vernier scale. Focus has coarse and fine controls on one shaft, and the head turns all the way round.

Immersion oil and a dust cover are in the box, but no slides, so add a set such as the N20 NG. If you'd rather look with both eyes and 400x is enough, the Erudit Basic is binocular, and the Researcher Bino gives two eyepieces and 1000x together.

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Bacteria and blood cells at 1000x with oil
  • School, college and hobby biology
  • Field trips, on its rechargeable battery
  • Pointing out a detail to someone else with the pointer eyepiece

Not for

  • Viewing with both eyes; it has one eyepiece
  • Solid objects; the light is below the stage only
  • A young child's first microscope; oil immersion takes some practice
